More Valencia Rambles

Pat, some blue skies for you!  Hopefully these will keep you going for a bit.

Going back to architecture, this place fascinates me.  We are staying right in the centre, and to the back of us is a barrio called Carmen which consists of a lot of small, narrow streets, much of it run down and derelict, some of it renovated and buzzing.  It is the Camden part of town and we love it.

And it's a difficult question, as you will see from these photos it is run down, and of course the only people who can stop it falling down are relatively wealthy, or investors in tourism.  So you do get a lot of rental apartments.  The locals want to keep their barrio but can't afford to buy and renovate, and there is a lot of antagonism.  If it is all tourism it is a bit of a dead zone, but then it is a bit of a dead zone anyway.  I really hope they can find a middle ground.

I love these tiles under the balconies

And of course the Street Art or some people would call Graffiti.  Valencia is full of it, El Carmen loads.  It appears to be accepted by people here, and repainted often.  But then I suppose when the buildings are derelict it doesn't matter so much and gives interest.

We talked to some artists redoing a wall in El Carmen

When does it stop being graffiti and become art?  I love it, but then it is not on my building!
